Best Healthcare Technology Companies To Invest In 2014

The data on the prospects for the Chinese economy is mixed, says MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, while the GDP numbers are encouraging, the corporate numbers are not yet.

We are seeing a very, very mixed picture on the Chinese economy, that the official numbers, which sort of focus on GDP growth, look like they are pretty strong. It looks like we are going to see better growth for the last, oh, for September, October, November, December, and then into 2014 than we have seen before. That is at least what we are getting out of official numbers like the Purchasing Managers' Index, which came in slightly above expectations for September. On the other hand, if you look at, not the GDP numbers, but the corporate numbers, they are looking kind of grim.

What those numbers are reporting, whether it is from an organization such as Forensic Asia, which looks at corporate accounting and stocks in the Chinese market, or whether it is from something called China Beige Book, which is an attempt to pull together economic numbers for China the same way that the Fed does for the United States, but it is a private company, what they are saying is that while GDP may be growing, because you have over capacity, because you have falling prices, what you are seeing is not much in the way of revenue growth at a lot of companies, they are competing for too little market among too many companies, and you are seeing profits fall.

And if you thought this crack team would look only at internal promotion candidates, headhunter firm Heidrick & Struggles (NASDAQ: HSII  ) is there to vet the field of outsider candidates. It's a high-profile contract for Heidrick, but the stock fell 0.7% today anyhow. The lack of popping champagne corks in the company's Chicago headquarters is an indication of just how tough this recruitment drive will be.

Chicago-based Heidrick & Struggles (NASDAQ: HSII  ) needs a new CEO.

For weeks, rumors have swirled that Heidrick was on the block for possible sale to a new owner. Those rumors were squashed Monday, however, when the executive-search firm simultaneously announced that (a) it has decided to pursue a "stand-alone strategy," and (b) that Chief Executive Officer L. Kevin Kelly is leaving the company. (The company also had some good news -- revenues for the fiscal second quarter look to be close to the high point of its previously announced $110 million-to-$120 million range.)

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tom Aspray]

The bond market, as represented by the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) is still up just over 5% as the yield on the 10-Year T-Note is still locked in it's trading range. The generally bullish job report last Friday should allow the Fed to stay on its tapering course for the near future.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Federico Zaldua]

Banco Frances (BFR), 75% controlled by Banco Bilbao Viscaya Argentaria, is among the biggest banks in Argentina. The bank has the smallest exposure to Argentina's public debt out of the three banks analyzed in the article and presents the lowest pace of growth. That said, its one of the healthiest banks in the country given that it has the lowest NPL ratio and the highest reserve ratio to absorb potential losses. The bank also trades cheaply at 3.5 times P/E and 85% its book value. Being more expensive (although still very cheap relative to the sector's average) and with the lowest liquidity among this group of three, I would exclude Banco Frances from my Argentinean bank portfolio.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Pendrell (PCO) is a fully integrated intellectual property investment and advisory firm. This stock closed up 2.3% to $2.18 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $2.08-$2.22

    52-Week Range: $1.04-$2.71

    Tuesday's Volume: 263,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 457,962

From a technical perspective, PCO bounced higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $2.16 with lighter-than-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of PCO within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if PCO manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $2.22 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in PCO as long as it's trending above Tuesday's low of $2.08 or above $2 and then once it sustains a move or close above $2.22 with volume that hits near or above 457,962 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PCO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.50 to its 52-week high at $2.71.
