First up is Pinnacle Entertainment (PNK). CEO Anthony Michaal Sanfilippo bought 23,000 shares of the Las Vegas-based gaming company for $505,800. InsiderScore notes this is his first purchase in nearly two years and writes, "After shares retreated more than 15% from a six-year high and with an activist hedge fund pushing the casino operator to spin off its real estate into a REIT, Sanfilippo stepped up with his first purchase. [He put] a fresh $500,000 into the stock at a price two times his cost basis of previous buys."

    Time to make the switch
If I could name a sector that I'd certainly tread lightly around considering that consumers are tightening their wallets, it would be the casino sector. Casino companies rely on loose wallets and vacations to drive profits. This is why I feel it could be the time to say goodbye to casino and race track operator Pinnacle Entertainment (NYSE: PNK  ) near its 52-week high.

Moreover, the Wall Street Journal has pointed out that corn prices are the lowest in more than three years and fewer birds are in production as some producers cut back on their flocks this year due to weaker turkey commodity prices. Feed prices, which make up about 70% of the cost of a turkey, had soared with the price of corn which hit the $8 a bushel level but a recent bumper crop has sent corn prices plunging to about the $4 a bushel level.

Treasurys extend rise after confidence data

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Treasury prices climbed Tuesday, sending yields lower after housing and consumer-confidence data showed waning optimism about economic growth.

The 10-year Treasury note (10_YEAR)  yield, which moves inversely to price, fell 3 basis points on the day to 2.677%. The 30-year bond (30_YEAR)  yield fell 3 basis points to 3.698%, and the 5-year note (5_YEAR)  yield fell 2 basis point to 1.432%.

Conference Board data on Tuesday showed that a consumer confidence index fell to 79.7 in September from a revised 81.8 in August. That beat economists' projections of a drop to 79.5, but registered at the lowest in four months on renewed worries about wages and job availability.

Home prices rose by a seasonally adjusted 1% in July, according to Federal Housing Finance Agency data Tuesday, an 8.8% jump from the same period a year ago. The S&P/Case Shiller 20-city composite index showed a 1.8% rise in July, the smallest jump since March.

Click to Play On Wall Street, consumers are key

Polya Lesova takes a look at today's market action, including three stocks to watch.

The consumer and housing results come as the bond market is once again on alert for data that could shed light on when and how the Federal Reserve acts to scale back the pace of its $85 billion in monthly bond buys, which had been used to help stimulate economic growth. The central bank's decision not to taper at its policy meeting last week surprised many market participants, who saw bonds sell off sharply during the summer in anticipation of Fed action.

Best Industrial Disributor Stocks To Invest In 2016

Given the Fed's dovish tone, some are now projecting yields to move lower.

"On a risk-adjusted basis, we believe that Treasurys offer good value as yields recede following the recent rise," said HSBC Global Research strategists, led by Fredrik Nerbrand, global head of asset allocation, in a note. "Our fixed-income strategists expect the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield to fall to 2.1% over the next 12 months. Such a move should have a sizeable impact on the entire financial landscape."

Meanwhile, New York Fed President William Dudley said on CNBC Tuesday that markets should not have been surprised by the Fed's decision to hold off on tapering.

The 2-year note yield (2_YEAR)   traded on Tuesday at 0.334%, down half a basis point on the day, ahead of an auction of $33 billion of the notes. The auction represents a reduction of $1 billion from last month's sale of 2-year notes, and $2 billion from prior sales as the U.S. government's reduced deficit decreases the amount of borrowing.

Given the recent decline in yields, some analysts expect mediocre auction demand.

"Relative value does not look super compelling, as curves (short end vs. belly) have remained steep," said Stanley Sun, strategist at Nomura Securities, in a note. "The 2-year yields are also getting close to June [Federal Open Market Committee] levels and should require some concession pre-auction. Net, we expect only an average auction as the pros roughly balance the cons."

The Treasury Department will also sell $35 billion of 5-year notes on Wednesday and $29 billion of 7-year notes on Thursday.

Earlier this week, analysts at Credit Sui! sse reduced earnings estimates for Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Schlumberger (SLB) and Weatherford International (WFT).

  • [By reports.droy]

In a recent article from the Financial Times, GE's Oil and Gas division head Lorenzo Simonelli stated that the company had started to become a major player in the oil and gas industry, taking market share from the "big four" in the industry- Schlumberger (SLB), Halliburton (HAL), Weatherford (WFT) and Baker Hughes (BHI). Although it still remains smaller than the big four it does have a promising future ahead.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Although other large-cap service companies have exposure to Russia, we believe the effect is also minimal. Specifically, Weatherford (WFT) has noted that the Russian sanctions are not a concern as this is a very small portion of its business. In addition, this business is not impacted by the sanctions which are against Arctic and shale-related technologies. We estimate that Weatherford’s revenue in Russia is less than 3% of our estimated 2014 revenue.

  • [By Dimitra DeFotis]

The market seems to be showing fatigue particularly with positive onshore oil service data points that may no longer seem incremental. Investors have become especially focused on potential issues and macro concerns. We believe this phase of enhanced risk perceptions will pass and still recommend owning selective stocks based on attractive valuations and healthy fundamentals. Of the 16 oilfield services companies having reported their quarters to date, the share price changes have at times been difficult to tie to specific results.  … Five of the 12 companies who have beaten earnings expectations have seen their share prices drop on the day, including Basic Energy Services (BAS) (-9.0%), Baker Hughes (BHI) (-2.5%), National Oilwell Varco (NOV) (-1.5%), Oceaneering (OII) (-4.2%), and Schlumberger (SLB) (-2.0%). Other stocks beating expectations have traded higher as expected, including Came! ron Inter! national (CAM) (+4.1%), FMC Technologies (FTI) (+3.1%), Mitcham In dustries (MIND) (+3.8%), Nabors Industries (NBR) (+1.2%), Patterson-UTI Energy (PTEN) (+1.8%), RPC (RES) (+8.4%), and Weatherford International (WFT) (+2.3%). Crude-oil futures shed 1.6% to $77.40 a barrel, sending oil-sensitive stock such as Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) falling. Gold futures fell 0.9% to $1159.60 an ounce.

  • [By Anders Bylund]

Exxon is a bit of an anomaly, as the company manages to stick ! close to the Dow average here, dishing out 45.7% of its free cash, while the broader oil industry tends to jump around at the whim of changing petroleum prices. Fellow oil-producer Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) isn't so lucky, spending 86% of its free cash on dividend checks. The roles were the same a year earlier, though the magnitudes were different: Chevron invested 41.8% of its 2011 cash flow in dividends, while Exxon's ratio was an even lower 37%.

  • [By David Dittman]

Answer: Based on your parameters I would pick TransCanada Corp (TSX: TRP, NYSE: TRP), Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE: VZ), NextEra Energy Inc, ONEOK Inc and Chevron Corp (NYSE: CVX).

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

Shares of Chevron (CVX) were up 0.7% in recent trading, on the heels that it has reached a settlement with Brazilian prosecutors.

Chevron and Transocean (RIG) were named in the $20 billion lawsuit over a 2011 oil spill off the southeast coast of the country, and both parties are expected to sign off on the deal today, reports The Wall Street Journal. Criminal charges against executives have already been dropped.

The move comes at a delicate time for Brazilwhile many energy companies are eager to tap the nations resources and appetite, some criticized the government of overacting to the spill; the settlement should calm some ruffled feathers a month before the country will auction off rights to what is believed to be one of the largest oil fields ever discovered in deep ocean waters, notes the Journal.

However, Transocean didnt get any bump from the news, and was trading down 1.5% at recent check. Both names have lagged the index in the past year: While the S&P 500 has gained nearly 15% in the last 12 months, Chevron is up 5.7% and Transocean is up just 1.7%.

Other oil majors like Exxon (XOM) and ConocoPhillips (COP) are also up today.

Update: Reuters is reporting that Chevron is considering bid for stake in a Brazil offshore oil prospect (via Bri! efing.com! ).

At the end of last week, small cap sandwich stock Potbelly Corp (NASDAQ: PBPB) had a delicious surge of 120% for its IPOmeaning its probably a good idea to see whether its still worth getting in on the action plus take a look at the performance of peersCosi Inc (NASDAQ: COSI), Panera Bread Co (NASDAQ: PNRA) and Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, Inc (NASDAQ: BAGL) as Subway remains private. I should mention that competing with Subway in the sandwich business is a tall order as they have 40,229 restaurants in 102 countries and territories as of early Septembermaking them thelargest single-brand restaurant chain and the largest restaurant operator globally. However, Potbelly Corp and its peers Cosi Inc, Panera Bread Co and Einstein Noah Restaurant Group aren slugging it out directly with Subway.

The Q1 2014 Potbelly Corp (NASDAQ: PBPB) earnings report is scheduled for after the market closes on Tuesday, May 6th, with investors and traders alike who follow either the sandwich restaurant chain stock (which debuted last October and is down some 44% for retail investors)or who are into potential small cap peers like Cosi Inc (NASDAQ: COSI), Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, Inc (NASDAQ: BAGL) and Panera Bread Co (NASDAQ: PNRA) should be paying attention. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Potbelly Corporation (NASDAQ: PBPB) was among the hottest of the hot IPOs of 2013 when you count first day gains as a public company. The problem is that the sandwich chain became too hot to handle for new investors. Barron’s recently couldn’t help but call the stock grossly overvalued and that helped send shares south amid more government shutdown and debt ceiling debate uncertainty. We felt the stock was overvalued too, but this pullback is something that we would call a really good thing.

As the fast-food wars heat up, restaurants are getting more creative with their menu items. One item that is getting a lot of attention is the waffle. Two restaurant chains that have introduced their own variations of the waffle are Taco Bell, owned by Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM  ) and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen (NASDAQ: PLKI  ) . Taco Bell has made the Waffle Taco a centerpiece of its new breakfast menu. Meanwhile, Popeyes is bringing back its popular Chicken Waffle Tenders. Could the waffle be the answer and boost same-store sales for these restaurants? If it is the answer, expect to see more variations of the waffle on many more menu boards.

Top Restaurant Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc (ARCO)

Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc., incorporated on December 9, 2010, is a McDonald franchisee. As of December 31, 2010, the Company operated or franchised 1,755 McDonald-branded restaurants, which represented 6.7% of McDonald total franchised restaurants globally. As of December 31, 2010, of its 1,755 McDonald-branded restaurants in the territories, 1,292 (or 74%) were Company-operated restaurants and 463 (or 26%) were franchised restaurants. As of December 31, 2010, it owned the land for 510 of its restaurants (totaling approximately 1.2 million square meters) and the buildings for all but 12 of its restaurants. It divides its operations into four geographical divisions: Brazil; the Caribbean division, consisting of Aruba, Curacao, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands of St. Croix and St. Thomas; North Latin America division (NOLAD), consisting of Costa Rica, Mexico and Panama, and South Latin America division (SLAD), consisting of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The Company conducts its business through its indirect, wholly owned subsidiary Arcos Dorados B.V.

Company-Operated and Franchised Restaurants

The Company operates its McDonald-branded restaurants under two basic structures: Company-operated restaurants operated by the Company and franchised restaurants operated by franchisees. Under both operating alternatives the real estate location may ! either be owned or leased by the Company. It owns, fully manages and operates the Company-operated restaurants and retains any operating profits generated by such restaurants, after paying operating expenses and the franchise and other fees owed to McDonald under the Master Franchise Agreements (MFAs). In Company-operated restaurants, it assumes the capital expenditures for the building and equipment of the restaurant and, if it owns the real estate location, for the land as well. Under its franchise arrangements, franchisees provide a portion of the capital required by initially investing in the equipment, signs, seating and decor of their restaurants, and by reinvesting in the business over time. It is required by the MFAs to own the real estate or to secure long-term leases for franchised restaurant sites. It subsequently leases or subleases the property to franchisees.

In exchange for the lease and services, franchisees pay a monthly rent to the Company, based on the greater of a fixed rent or a certain percentage of gross sales. In addition to this monthly rent, it collects the monthly continuing franchise fee, which generally is 5% of the United States dollar equivalent of the restaurant gross sales, and pays these fees to McDonald pursuant to the MFAs. However, if a franchisee fails to pay its monthly continuing franchise fee, it remains liable for payment in full of these fees to McDonald. As of December 31, 2010, it was engaged in several joint ventures, which collectively owned 24 restaurants, in Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

Restaurant Categories

The Company classifies its restaurants into one of four categories: freestanding, food court, in-store and mall stores. Freestanding restaurants are the type of restaurant, which have ample indoor seating and include a drive-through area. Food court restaurants are located in malls and consist of a front counter and kitchen and do not have their own seating area. In-store restaurants are part ! of a larg! er building and resemble freestanding restaurants, except for the lack of a drive-through area. Mall stores are located in malls like food court restaurants, but have their own seating areas. As of December 31, 2010, 808 (or 46.2%) of its restaurants were freestanding, 359 (or 20.5%) were food court, 265 (or 15.1%) were in-stores and 319 (or 18.2%) were mall stores. In addition, it has four non-traditional stores, such as food carts.

Reimaging

As of December 31, 2010, the Company had completed the reimaging of 308 of 1,569 restaurants. Many of the reimaging projects include the addition of McCafe locations to the restaurant. It has developed system-wide guidelines for the interior and exterior design of reimaged restaurants.

McCafe Locations and Dessert Centers

McCafe locations are stylish, separate areas within restaurants where customers can purchase a range of customizable beverages, including lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, hot and iced premium coffees and hot chocolate. As of December 31, 2010, there were 267 McCafe locations in the Territories, of which 12% were operated by franchisees. Argentina, with 71 locations, has McCafe locations, followed by Brazil, with 67 locations. In addition to McCafe locations, it has Dessert Centers. Dessert Centers operate from existing restaurants, but depend on them for supplies and operational support. As of December 31, 2010, there were 1,306 Dessert Centers in the Territories.

Product Offerings

The Company menus feature three tiers of products: affordable entry-level options, such as its Big Pleasures, Small Prices or Combo del Dia (Daily Extra Value Meal) offerings, core menu options, such as the Big Mac, Happy Meal and Quarter Pounder, and premium options, such as Big Tasty or Angus premium hamburgers and chicken sandwiches and low-calorie or low-sodium products, which are marketed through common platforms rather than as individual items. These platforms can be based on the ty! pe of pro! ducts, such as beef, chicken, salads or desserts, or on the type of customer targeted, such as the children menu.

Advisors' Opinion:

Arcos Dorados (ARCO) operates and franchises McDonald's restaurants in Latin America. This stock closed up 7.7% to $13.33 in Wednesday's trading session.

    Wednesday's Volume: 3.81 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 856,761

    Volume % Change: 333%

From a technical perspective, ARCO soared higher here back above both its 50-day moving average at $12.31 and its 200-day moving average at $12.86 with heavy upside volume. This move has now taken shares of ARCO out of its downtrend and the stock closed strong near the highs of the day. Shares of ARCO are now moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if ARCO manages to take out its intraday high of $13.42 and then once it clears more resistance at $14.35 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ARCO as long as it's trending above its 200-day at $12.86 or its 50-day at $12.31 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 856,761 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ARCO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $15.52 to its 52-week high at $16. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give ARCO a chance to tag $18 to $19.

10 Best Rising Stocks To Own Right Now

Ever since the Federal Reserve announced its preliminary plans to exit its quantitative-easing program, investors have changed their previous views that the Fed wouldn't do anything that would allow the economy to slip back into recession. Today, though, some of the old enthusiasm came back into the market after first-quarter GDP was revised from 2.4% down to 1.8%, inspiring confidence that the Fed won't start tapering its bond-buying program as soon as many had feared. With the old "bad news is good news" paradigm seemingly back in effect, the Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) has posted a triple-digit gain in early trading, up 106 points at 10:55 a.m. EDT.

Among Dow stocks, Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) has powered the Dow's gains, rising more than 2% after customer British Airways took delivery of its first Dreamliner aircraft. Even with the time frame for Dreamliner deliveries having been derailed by the aircraft's battery problems, airline companies appear to remain committed to the fuel savings and other efficiency benefits that Boeing's newer aircraft offer. With trillions of dollars of new orders expected in the coming 20 years, Boeing only needs to demonstrate its ability to make good on its order backlog in order to reap huge gains.

I actually spoke with Mr. Tim Matula, who is a former director and also handled investor relations for Diamond Ranch Foods (the predecessor company). Mr. Matula is also a long-time director at Nuvilex (NVLX.PK), which I recently suggested is an overly promoted stock exhibiting several of the signs about which FINRA has been warning investors (more on this later). Matula answered the phone number included on recent press releases by PLPL - I was expecting to hear an answering machine, as my call was in the late evening. He explained that he was no longer involved with the company due to having too many time-constraints. He also explained his sale of 4.9mm shares back to the company at $0.025 on February 7th, suggesting an open market sale would have been impossible. Note that PLPL has never traded below $0.04, so I found this curious. It was Matula who passed me along to Shane Traveller. He also told me that he is the brother of Tom Matula, the Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board (more later).

But as highlighted earlier Whitecap's Canadian light sweet crude is not as heavily discounted as Canadian heavy oil or bitumen. This does not leave it exposed to the same price risks and volatility as those companies that have a significant portion of their production made up by Canadian heavy oil and Bitumen, such as Husky Energy (HUSKF.PK), Suncor (SU), Imperial Oil (IMO) and Canadian Natural Resources (CNQ).

We downgrade ExxonMobil to Underweight from Equal Weight primarily due to its relative valuation. The shares are currently trading at a 9% premium to its NAV compared to the group average discount of 17%. Although we have modestly increased our price target to $105 from $100 and set it above its NAV estimate to give credit to the company seemingly conservative non-proved resource estimate, we believe the potential upside is limited compared to other names in our coverage. We think the stock will continue to face relative headwinds concerning the lack of meaningful near-term production growth and our belief of a relatively steady high oil price environment. We recommend switching from ExxonMobil to ConocoPhillips, Imperial Oil (IMO), or Suncor. That said, ExxonMobil will likely outperform the group in the event of any unexpected significant negative macro developments given its long held afe havenstatus.

Chrysler via AP DETROIT -- Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) is recalling more than 566,000 trucks and SUVs in two recalls for malfunctioning fuel heaters that can cause fires and a software glitch can disable the electronic stability control. The recalls bring the newly merged company's total for the year to 6.4 million vehicles worldwide and 5.1 million in the U.S. as it continues to struggle with reliability problems. It wasn't immediately clear whether those totals were annual records. On Tuesday, its longtime quality chief abruptly left after Fiat Chrysler performed poorly in Consumer Reports magazine's annual reliability rankings. The largest of two recalls announced Wednesday covers almost 382,000 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups and Ram 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs from 2010 through 2014. In trucks with 6.7-Liter Cummins diesel engines, corrosion on a fuel heater terminal could cause overheating, fuel leaks and fires. Chrysler isn't aware of any fires or injuries. Owners could be warned by an odor of diesel fuel. Customers will be notified by letters starting in December. Dealers will install upgraded terminals and fuel heater housings could be replaced. The second recall covers more than 184,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs from 2014. A debris cover over a circuit board in the steering column control module can disrupt communications and disable the stability control. The problem was discovered when dealers started getting reports from customers that electronic stability control warning lights were coming on. Fiat Chrysler says it knows of no crashes or injuries caused by the problem. Technicians will upgrade software to fix the SUVs, and customers will be notified in December. Fiat Chrysler has issued 33 global recalls and 27 in the U.S. so far this year. Doug Betts, its longtime quality chief, left the company to pursue other options after Consumer Reports' survey-based rankings this year showed four Fiat Chrysler brands at the bottom of its list.

General Motors Co.(GM) and Ford Motor Co.(F) are expected to report sales later Monday morning.

Charles Krupa/AP DETROIT -- Chrysler and General Motors each posted U.S. sales gains last month, strong signs that Black Friday promotions and falling gas prices drove U.S. auto sales higher in November. Chrysler (FCAU) sales were up 20 percent to nearly 171,000 vehicles, helping the company to its best November in 13 years, while GM sales rose 6 percent to nearly 226,000. Chrysler was led by the 200 midsize sedan with sales that more than doubled to over 14,000. It sold nearly 36,000 Ram pickups, an increase of 21 percent for its top-selling vehicle. Jeep Cherokee small SUV sales rose 67 percent to nearly 17,000. At GM (GM), the Chevrolet Silverado pickup was the top seller with sales up nearly 25 percent to almost 43,000. GMC Sierra pickup sales rose 57 percent to nearly 23,000, and Chevy Cruze compact car sales were up 26 percent to nearly 23,000. The TrueCar.com auto pricing site predicts that total U.S. sales last month will reach 1.3 million, up around 4 percent from a year ago and the fastest pace since August. The hot sales are being fueled by zero-percent financing and rebates. But the sales are still profitable for automakers due to high transaction prices. Analysts predict that Black Friday promotions started early and helped the month close strong, and falling gas prices boosted sales of SUVs. TrueCar President John Krafcik said deals -- such as zero-percent financing on new Chevrolets or a $3,500 credit on a new BMW -- drew buyers, along with hot-selling new vehicles like the Cherokee and Toyota Camry. Despite the deals, it was a profitable month for the industry, with consumers poised to set new spending records. As of mid-November, buyers were spending an average of $30,874 per vehicle, or $165 more than the previous record of $30,709 in October, according to consulting firms J.D. Power and LMC Automotive. That was partly because buyers were loading up their vehicles with extras like adaptive cruise control and navigation, and also be

For the calendar year-to-date, the Fund Investor Class returned +2.9% compared to +8.3% for the S&P 500 and +7.0% for the Russell 3000. DIRECTV (DTV) (+25% on AT&T buyout offer), Martin Marietta Materials (MLM) (+30% on its acquisition of Texas Industries) and Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) (+12%, and in the news for its hostile takeover battle for Allergan) benefited from the robust deal environment in different ways. Interval Leisure (IILG) (-37%) was the largest detractor and one of our few companies where business value declined. Our earnings estimates fell roughly 15% when Interval announced that four large, multi-year corporate relationships renewed at less favorable rates in their timeshare exchange business. We think the stock has overreacted to this news, and the company continues to add strategically to its platform. Other small-cap stocks that detracted from year-to-date results included XO Group (XOXO) (-25%) and Redwood Trust (RWT) (-11%). Broader themes behind the relative shortfall include our overweight position in consumer discretionary companies (the weakest sector in the market year-to-date), our lack of near-term big winners in health care and technology (the strongest sectors in the market year-to-date) and our conservative portfolio positioning in the first half of the year. We are not pleased with recent results. It is natural for our concentrated investing style to be out of step with the market at times.
