Early Report on Black Friday Online Sales: Up 7%

At noon ET on Black Friday, online sales are up 7% compared with the same period a year ago and the average order value this year is $142.33. The data is collected and reported by the Digital Analytics Benchmark group at International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM).

Other data points of interest from IBM's cloud-based digital analytics platform:

Mobile traffic accounted for 37% of all online traffic, up more than third from a year ago Mobile sales accounted for 21.5% of all online sales Smartphones drove 24.4% of online traffic, nearly double the traffic from tablets Tablet traffic drove 1.5x more sales than smartphone traffic Average sale per tablet user was $137.96, compared with $119.21 per smartphone user Sales to users of iPhones from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) totaled 17.5%, more than 4x the sales for users of Google Inc.'s (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android operating system iPhone users posted an average sale per user of $131.52 compared with $113.13 for Android users Shoppers referred by Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) averaged $93.73 per order and shoppers referred from Pinterest averaged $103.30 per order Facebook referrals converted to sales at more than twice the rate of Pinterest referrals

One final note. Earlier this morning we looked at shopping versus NFL football to see which was the real American sport. The numbers are finally in for last night's Steelers/Ravens game. More than 18.6 million viewers watched the prime-time broadcast of the game, but that number is probably far less than went shopping.

‘Great Rotation’ Overblown, Sanford Analyst Says

It’s not that the “great rotation” isn’t happening; it’s just that it’s not happening as most investors expected. That’s the idea put forth by Sanford Bernstein analyst Luke Montgomery, one he says will result in a lot disappointment for those expecting a boost in equity prices as a result.

The great rotation, a term almost as ubiquitous as the “New Normal” in the years since the economic crisis and rebound, describes the exit from bonds as yields scrape bottom and interest rate risk rises.

“A rotation mental model may stem from incomplete notions of supply, demand, pricing and flows in capital markets,” Luke Montgomery, an analyst at the New York-based firm covering asset managers, wrote Friday in a note to clients.

Montgomery cited “misconceptions over what happens when one investment type appears to win favor at the expense of another, saying there’s no automatic correlation between the migration of money and asset prices,” according to Bloomberg, who received a copy of the report. He also disputed the notion that individual investors are holding less in stocks than they have historically, supposedly setting up a major shift.

In the report, Montgomery questioned how much of a rotation can occur and what its impact would be. According to the news service, “he took aim at the argument that high levels of bank deposits and bond mutual fund assets created by the U.S. Federal Reserve’s stimulus efforts might suddenly pour into stocks.

“While quantitative easing floods investors with liquid financial assets and can inflate other asset values, this does not mean deposits in aggregate then become a latent source of funds for risk assets,” Montgomery wrote.

What’s more, he said, bonds can drop in value without money flowing into other assets.

“Wealth destruction in bonds can be an independent event — bond wealth can simply evaporate and need not be offset by wealth created in equities, or any other asset class,” he added, according to Bloomberg. “Once the rate hike cycle begins, there is a far wider range of possibilities for the future market values of (and allocations to) cash, bonds and equities than may be envisioned by the great rotation mental model.”

Money managers and related industry experts have debated the timing and severity of the great rotation since the term was first introduced by Bank of America Merrill Lynch analysts in 2011.

“The great rotation is a ridiculous notion. It’s utterly illogical,” DoubleLine’s Jeffrey Gundlach said in April. “You could also call it a great rotation into bonds from stocks.”

More recently, however, TrimTabs Investment Research said indicators were “very strong” the great rotation has begun, citing U.S. equity mutual funds and exchange-traded funds received a record $40.3 billion in July, easily surpassing the previous record of $34.6 billion in February 2000.

“We're really only a few months of these heavy flows, but yes, the ‘great rotation’ so many pundits have been expecting may finally be starting,” David Santschi, TrimTabs CEO, told ThinkAdvisor over the summer.  “In June and July, U.S. equity funds posted an inflow of $39.9 billion, while bond funds redeemed $90.1 billion.”

U.S. Stocks Keep Gains; S&P 500 Closes At New High

U.S. stocks held gains into Tuesday's closing bell as renewed hopes that the Federal Reserve will maintain its current easy-money policies helped lift the S&P 500 index to another record high close.

Hitting a monthly high, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 76.48 points, or 0.5% to close at 15,468.68. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 9.5 points or 0.2% to close at 3,929.57.

And the S&P 500 index climbed 10.07 points, or 0.58% to close at 1,754.73, with materials and consumer staples leading the gains.

The market owes today's euphoria to the government’s September nonfarm payroll report. Delayed by more than two weeks because of the government shutdown, it showed 148,000 jobs were added in September, below forecasts for a gain of 180,000.

In the wake of the disappointing jobs data, expectations for when the Fed will taper its bond-buying efforts shifted into 2014. Fed stimulus has helped the market rally this year because low interest rates help hold down corporate costs and fuels investment in the stock market.

Top 10 Value Stocks To Buy For 2014

"It essentially takes tapering off the table for October and likely December as well," wrote Sterne Agee chief economist Lindsey Piegza in a note published Tuesday. "As we have noted before Bernanke opened the door for tapering to be a 2014 event in the press conference following the September FOMC statement release when he said even if we begin to taper this year, each subsequent move will be data dependent. The Fed is still waiting to see noticeable improvement in hiring and it appears they are going to be waiting even longer."

U.S. Treasury yields suffered a sharp drop with the rate on the 10-year note falling to 2.51%.

The price of gold rose 1.85% to $1340.20 per ounce, while crude oil dropped 1.5% to $98.22 a barrel.

In corporate news:

Netflix (NFLX) CEO Reed Hasting warned that momentum investors were responsible for a portion of the stock's huge gains this year. At $322.44, the shares  fell 9.2% despite posting better than expected financial results and a bullish fourth-quarter forecast.

Apple (AAPL) shares fell after the company at an event unveiled a new, lighter iPad, new software to operate its computers and new laptop and desktop computers.

Whirlpool (WHR) surged 11.6% to $146.19 after the appliance maker reported profits more than doubled in the third quarter and increased its forecast for the year.

Coach (COH) fell 7.5% to $50.10 afterreporting a drop in revenue during the previous quarter.

Why Amazon U.S. Workers Could Strike

German workers are not happy with Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) — again. In May 500 warehouse workers affiliated with the Ver.di union walked off the job at two Amazon warehouses in Germany. Workers walked off the job again Monday, repeating their demand that they be paid wages according to the national standard for the mail order and retail sectors. Amazon classifies the employees as logistics workers and the company said its employees are paid above average wages for that classification.

In the U.S. Amazon pays its warehouse associates an average of $11.71 according to website Glassdoor.com. For a full-time employee that amounts to a little less than $24,500 annually. The total number of reports from Amazon warehouse workers is just 57, so the sample is pretty small. Thirteen employees also reported received cash bonuses averaging $1,027. Not a king's ransom by any means, but it is higher than the wages paid by some other large U.S. employers.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT), which will be the target of strikes and protests on Black Friday, pays an average of $8.86 an hour according to figures at Glassdoor, or a full-time annual salary of about $18,500. Glassdoor reports that 53 employees reported receiving cash bonuses averaging $629 and 30 employees reported profit-sharing payments averaging $598. The workers who are striking against Walmart have demanded that the company raise full-time annual salaries to a minimum of $25,000, roughly what Amazon pays.

Even more poorly paid than Walmart employees are baristas at Starbucks Corp. (NASDAQ: SBUX), where the reported hourly wage is $8.81. Tips add another $1,600 or so to the annual salary total, so a typical barista is probably earning about $20,000. Glassdoor.com notes that 4 employees received an average bonus of $882. That's out of 230 reports filed with the company.

Voters in the state of Washington earlier in November approved a measure requiring businesses at the SeaTac airport to pay a minimum wage of $15 an hour. Both Amazon and Starbucks are headquartered in Seattle, so this vote could add a little pressure on both companies to increase pay for lower level employees.

Amazon has never held any collective bargaining sessions with any union or group of employees anywhere, at any time and very likely never will. The company already makes only the tiniest of profits when it makes any profit at all. Could the company's U.S. workers strike? Sure, but there's been no hint of union organizing in the U.S. and the reason for striking would certainly be different from that used by the German workers.

What could tip the balance is any movement by Walmart either to recognize a union or to raise wages. That is so unlikely at this point as to be virtually inconceivable. But stranger things have happened.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonathan Yates]

For those looking to invest in real estate stocks, highly recommended is the Dr. Housing Bubble blog. In a recent posting, the "Dr." pointed out that there was a "Lost Generation" when it came to household income. That has not happened for those investing in staffing industry stocks such as Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX), Robert Half International (NYSE: RHI), TrueBlue, Inc. (NYSE: TBI), and Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC).

  • [By Travis Hoium]

What: Shares of staffing agency TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI  ) jumped 10% today after the company reported earnings.

So what: Revenue jumped 19%, to $422.3 million, and beat estimates of $420.2 million from Wall Street. Adjusted earnings per share were also up 19%, to $0.31, outpacing estimates by $0.05.

  • [By Jonathan Yates]

When looking at small cap stocks, it is useful to compare the company with others that have expanded in both share price and size. For those considering investing in the $100 billion staffing industry, the growth of TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI) shows what could be the potential path for Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC), as both operate in the $29 billion demand labor sector. Other firms have done well in the staffing industry include Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX) and ManPower Group (NYSE: MAN).

  • [By idahansen]

The entire demand labor industry should do well as the US Department of Labor just reported that 169,000 more jobs were added to the American economy. The more work there is, the more demand there is for the services of staffing solutions firms such as Labor SMART, Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX), TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI), and Robert Half International (NYSE: RHI).

  • [By Vanin Aegea]

I have heard many people comment about the insurance policies for cars, houses, life, assets, etc. The arguments always revolve around the same issue: Is it really necessary? What are the chances to be hit by a Hurricane, or to meet a sudden death? Well, nobody really knows. Some individuals however, sleep better when they know a policy backs their life investments. Here, I will look into three insurance companies that concentrate on different policies, or geographies. These are: China Life (LFC), and Conseco (CNO).

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Up first is CNO Financial Group (CNO), a mid-cap financial stock that's rocketed close to 60% higher since the calendar flipped over to January. Yup, it's been a great year for the market, but it's been a far better one for investors who own CNO. But that strong performance isn't showing any signs of slowing yet. In fact, CNO looks primed for even more upside in the fourth quarter.

That's because CNO is currently forming a bullish pattern called an ascending triangle. The ascending triangle pattern is formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares -- in this case at $14.75 -- and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as CNO bounces in between those two technical price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above that $14.75 resistance level. When that breakout happens, it's time to become a buyer.

ACCO's price action isn't exactly textbook. After all, the pattern is coming in at the bottom of a downtrend, not after an uptrend. But ultimately, that doesn't change the trading implications of a move through that $7.50 level.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Ascending triangles and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $7.50 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant. The move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

Don't be early on this trade.

Scouring the market for excellent dividend stocks isn't as easy as finding the stocks with the highest yields. To illustrate, I'll analyze two companies whose stocks have meaningful dividend yields: Waste Management (NYSE: WM  ) and Ford (NYSE: F  ) .

Some of the companies most dependent on government for revenue are Harris Corp. (HRS) with 80% of revenue government-derived; Granite Construction Inc. (GVA) with 58%; Flir Systems Inc. Consider that municipalities and industrial giants such asWaste Management (NYSE: WM  ) are converting their fleets -- in this case garbage trucks -- torun on natural gas fuels(link opens a video). It's a little easier for Waste Management, since it uses biogas generated from its managed landfills to fuel its own vehicles. Clean Energy Fuels also sources biomethane from one of its landfills in Dallas. In fact, the facility can produce up to 36,000 gasoline-equivalent gallonseach day. We note that Keating Capital's co-investors in many of its portfolio companies are not simply other venture capital or existing investors, but strategic investors as well. Examples include Agilyx, where Waste Management (WM) is a co-investor, BrightSource, where Chevron (CVX) and BP (BP) are co-investors, Kabam, where Google (GOOG) and Intel (INTC) are co-investors, or Tremor Video (TRMR), where Time Warner (TWX) is a co-investor. As of the end of Q2 2013, 9 (excluding Jumptap) of Keating Capital's portfolio companies had unrealized gains, with an average gain of 25.6% (again excluding Jumptap, which had unrealized gains of 8% as of the end of Q2 2013). The remaining 6 companies had an average loss of 44.46%. However, on an overall basis, Keating Capital's portfolio currently has an average unrealized gain of 2.15%. While this is not a large gain, we note that the bulk of Keating Capital's profits are realized upon exiting an investment in conjunction with the portfolio company's IPO or sale. Furthermore, portions of Keating Capital's portfolio are defended by structurally protected appreciation clauses that the company has struck with its portfolio companies, clauses that are not reflected on its balance sheet. These clauses, which are negotiated between Keating Capital and its portfolio companies, allow the company to receive shares in the portfolio company's IPO at a discount, or grant it warrants to purchase additional shares in an IPO for a nominal price. Since inception, Keating Capital has negotiated structurally protected appreciation clauses in 11 of the 20 companies it has invested in. As of the end of Q2 2013, 6 of Keating Capital's 15 portfolio companies were protected by structurally protected appreciation clauses, representing $22 million in total capital (almost 43% of the company's invested capital), thereby entitling Keating Capital to a weighted-average aggregate value of 1.9x its investment at the time of an IPO.

Oh, That Washington Show

Print FriendlyPerhaps Mark Twain said it best: “Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.”

A partial shutdown of the federal government, the first since 1996, took effect on Tuesday. Some 800,000 government workers were furloughed. The extent of the negative impact on the economy is unclear.

In recent years, Congress has largely lost its ability to legislate and has abandoned its traditional budget/appropriations process. After three years of “kicking the can down the road” with last-minute deals that failed to address underlying problems, Congress finally so far has chosen not to do even that much this time around.

The ongoing White House policy of “leading from behind” requires no additional comment.

The bigger deadline and challenge will come later this month: the need to raise the nation’s debt limit.

The US Treasury says Congress must raise the federal borrowing limit, currently $16.7 trillion, by Oct. 17. Otherwise it will have just $30 billion left to fund government operations. Analysts say that amount could last for one or two weeks.

The continual self-absorption and air of crisis that now accompanies the basic tasks of governing have grown increasingly tiresome. Sadly, that in turn breeds indifference and detachment.

At least, that seems to be the message of the financial markets. After all, we’ve seen the Washington show all too many times. As of the close yesterday (Thursday), the Standard & Poor’s was down just 2.7 percent from its Sept. 18 high. And a pullback at this point, whatever the ostensible cause, is quite reasonable after the S&P 500′s 17.7 percent gain so far in 2013.

There’s precedent for a government shutdown. There have been 17 since 1977, according to the Congressional Research Service. Most have lasted one to three days. The longest ! was 21 days, in 1995-96.

But there’s no precedent for default.

A Treasury Dept. report this week said that if the debt ceiling isn’t raised or suspended, the impasse could cause credit markets to freeze, the dollar to plummet and interest rates to rise sharply. A default could potentially result “in a financial crisis and recession that could echo the events of 2008 or worse,” said the report.

It’s unclear whether that would really happen. But it’s widely agreed, both inside and outside the Beltway, that the consequences of a default could be severe. The willingness of the US government to even consider not paying its debts on time adds an element of political instability.

September, historically the worst month for stocks, turned out pretty well, with the S&P 500 rising 3 percent. This happened despite the uncertainties that loomed as the month began. These primarily concerned what the Federal Reserve would do regarding its $85-billion-per-month bond-buying program and the potential for a US military strike against Syria. But the Fed did nothing and the Syria strike was avoided.

Now October looms, with one significant threat: our politicians in Washington, DC. Moreover, October historically has been a month of some dramatic declines, notably the crashes of 1929 and 1987 plus the 17 percent drop of 2008.

But here’s another perspective. Since 2010, the bull market has been interrupted six times. Three of its significant pullbacks have been related to the European financial crisis. The other three came because of the political dysfunction in Washington.

In the spring of 2010, it was the fight over passage of the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). In the summer of 2011, it was the histrionics over lifting the debt ceiling and the first-ever credit downgrade of US government debt. Late last year, it was the uncertainty over the presidential election and then the battle over the so-called fiscal cliff.
If! history is a guide, we might see a significant market pullback amid the latest Washington crisis. But the historical precedent also points to an excellent buying opportunity if that occurs.

In any event, these troubles will pass.

Jim Rogers’ 5 Best & Worst Regions for Commodity Investing

“One word: Angola.”

In what seems like a play on the classically awkward “plastics” scene from The Graduate, commodities guru Jim Rogers counts Angola as a top pick for commodities investors.

Rogers tells The Daily Ticker that in addition to Asia (a seemingly perennial favorite), there are great opportunities in Africa, as well one big one in South America.

“I said to my wife, ‘let’s move to Angola — we could live like kings,'” the genteel and bow-tied Rogers, author of “Street Smarts: Adventures on the Road and in the Markets,” told the website on Monday. “She said, ‘you move to Angola; I don’t want to live like a queen in Angola’…but you could!”

He includes one big surprise (or maybe not, given his commodity bent).

Read on for his picks for the best and worst commodity spots around the globe:

Luanda, Angola's capital cityAngola: The website cites Bloomberg stats in noting Africa’s second-biggest oil producer has been looking to boost foreign investment after almost three decades of civil war that ended in 2002. For would-be investors, the country has plans for the start of stock exchange trading in 2016, with a futures and commodities market in 2017. The economy, it notes, grew 7.4% in 2012. The downside, according to the Ticker? The cost of living is described as “astronomical by expat standards."

The site adds: "Money is subject to strict government controls, and decades of war means infrastructure and arable land are lacking.” Marketplace in Mekele, EthiopiaEthiopia: It’s come a long way since Live Aid, and famed 1930s dictator Haile Selassie, deified by Rastafarians everywhere, would be proud. The Financial Times notes the African country, once known for its closed economy and squabbles with neighboring Eritrea, has become an enticing prospect for investors.

“Members of Ethiopia’s diaspora are moving back and leading the way along with Chinese investors," the Ticler says. "They’re trading coffee and investing in health care and manufacturing.” House in Uruguay (Photo: AP)Uruguay: No, it’s not Brazil or Argentina, but their much smaller neighbor. The website says living in Uruguay will cost you 30% to 40% less than living in the U.S.

“And if you do relocate or invest, the U.S. State Department reports Uruguay’s government has traditionally seen the importance of foreign investment, recognizing and enforcing property rights and contracts," the Ticker says.

It also noted that the strategist Jeremy Grantham recently named Uruguay a good place to invest in farmland in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Jets flying over Lower Manhattan. (Photo: AP)United States: He’s not in a New York state of mind (and doesn't think much of other points west).

“I fly into New York and I say, ‘Gosh, it’s just not as exciting as it used to be. Unfortunately, the dynamic and the energy is in Asia, not America, for the most part now, whether we like it or not.” European Union flags (Photo: AP)Europe: He also doesn’t buy into Europe’s long-term prospects, no matter what other pundits might say about northern Europe versus southern Europe, rebounds, recessions and other such talk.

“Most of Europe, while exciting at the moment, is in decline,” he said, before conceding, “It depends on where in Europe. There are countries in Europe that are still reasonably exciting.”

Best Insurance Stocks To Invest In Right Now

LONDON -- While crippling austerity in Europe has put the brakes on growth rates in Europe, a backdrop of accommodative central-bank action, elevated commodity prices, and rising personal-affluence levels has created an exceptional investing opportunity in developing countries.

The divergence between traditional and emerging markets is borne out by the latest International Monetary Fund projections, which put U.S. growth at 1.9% in 2013, while eurozone GDP is set to dip 0.3%. Conversely, emerging markets are anticipated to expand 5.3% this year.

Bubbly activity in developing geographies can create large opportunities for many London-listed firms. Today, I am looking at Aviva (LSE: AV  ) (NYSE: AV  ) and assessing whether its operations in these regions are likely to underpin solid earnings growth.

Operating profit slides across the board
Aviva reported in March that operating profit declined 15% in 2012 to 2.1 billion pounds, with weakness reported across the entire group. In life insurance and the general insurance and health division, profit dropped 5% and 4%, respectively. Fund management profit fell 16% to 51 million pounds.

Insurance Products

The Insurance Products segment offers a range of protection products and services aimed at serving the financial needs of its customers throughout their lives. These pro! ducts are sold to individuals and corporations, as well as other institutions and their respective employees. It is organized in three businesses: Group Life, Individual Life and Non-Medical Health.

The Group Life insurance products and services include variable life, universal life, and term life products. It offer group insurance products as employer-paid benefits or as voluntary benefits where all or a portion of the premiums are paid by the employee. These group products and services also include employee paid supplemental life and are offered as standard products or may be tailored to meet specific customer needs.

The Individual Life insurance products and services include variable life, universal life, term life and whole life products. Additionally, through its broker-dealer affiliates, it offers a full range of mutual funds and other securities products. The products within both Group Life and Individual Life include Variable Life, Universal Life, Term Life and Whole Life. Variable life products provide insurance coverage through a contract that gives the policyholder the policyholder flexibility in investment choices and, depending on the product, in premium payments and coverage amounts, with certain guarantees. With variable life products, premiums and account balances can be directed by the policyholder into a variety of separate account investment options or directed to the Company general account. In the separate account investment options, the policyholder bears the entire risk of the investment results.

Universal life products provide insurance coverage on the same basis as variable life, except that premiums, and the resulting accumulated balances, are allocated only to the Company general account. Universal life products may allow the insured to increase or decrease the amount of death benefit coverage over the term of the contract and the owner to adjust the frequency and amount of premium payments.

Term life products provid! e a guara! nteed benefit upon the death of the insured for a specified time period in return for the periodic payment of premiums. Specified coverage periods range from one year to 30 years, but in no event are they longer than the period over, which premiums are paid. Death benefits may be level over the period or decreasing. Decreasing coverage is used principally to provide for loan repayment in the event of death. Premiums may be guaranteed at a level amount for the coverage period or may be non-level and non-guaranteed. Term insurance products are sometimes referred to as pure protection products, in that there are typically no savings or investment elements. Term contracts expire without value at the end of the coverage period when the insured party is still living.

Whole life products provide a guaranteed benefit upon the death of the insured in return for the periodic payment of a fixed premium over a predetermined period. Premium payments may be required for the entire life of the contract period, to a specified age or period, and may be level or change in accordance with a predetermined schedule. Whole life insurance includes policies that provide a participation feature in the form of dividends. Policyholders may receive dividends in cash or apply them to increase death benefits, increase cash values available upon surrender or reduce the premiums required to maintain the contract in-force.

The Non-Medical Health products and services include dental insurance, group short- and long-term disability, individual disability income, long-term care (LTC), critical illness and accidental death & dismemberment coverage. Other products and services include employer-sponsored auto and homeowners insurance provided through the Auto & Home segment and prepaid legal plans. The Company also sells administrative services-only (ASO) arrangements to some employers. The products in this area are Dental, Disability and Long-term Care (LTC). Dental products provide insurance and ASO plans that ass! ist emplo! yees, retirees and their families in maintaining oral health while reducing out-of-pocket expenses and providing superior customer service. Dental plans include the Preferred Dentist Program and the Dental Health Maintenance Organization. Disability products provide a benefit in the event of the disability of the insured. This benefit is in the form of monthly income paid until the insured reaches age 65. In addition to income replacement, the product may be used to provide for the payment of business overhead expenses for disabled business owners or mortgage payment protection. This is offered on both a group and individual basis. LTC products provide protection against the potentially high costs of LTC services. They generally pay benefits to insureds that need assistance with activities of daily living or have a cognitive impairment.

Retirement Products

The Retirement products segment includes a variety of variable and fixed annuities that are primarily sold to individuals and employees of corporations and other institutions. The products in this area are Variable Annuities and Fixed Annuities. Variable annuities provide for both asset accumulation and asset distribution needs. Variable annuities allow the contract holder to make deposits into various investment options in a separate account, as determined by the contract holder. The risks associated with such investment options are borne entirely by the contract holder, except where guaranteed minimum benefits are involved.

Fixed annuities provide for both asset accumulation and asset distribution needs. Fixed annuities do not allow the same investment flexibility provided by variable annuities, but provide guarantees related to the preservation of principal and interest credited.

Corporate Benefit Funding

The Corporate Benefit Funding segment includes a range of annuity and investment products, including, guaranteed interest products and other stable value products, income annuitie! s, and se! parate account contracts for the investment management of defined benefit and defined contribution plan assets. This segment also includes certain products to fund postretirement benefits and company, bank or trust owned life insurance used to finance non-qualified benefit programs for executives. The products in this area are Stable Value Products, Pensions Closeouts, Torts and Settlements, Capital Markets Investment Products and other Corporate Benefit Funding Products and Services. The Company offers general account guaranteed interest contracts, separate account guaranteed interest contracts, and similar products used to support the stable value option of defined contribution plans. It also offers private floating rate funding agreements that are used for money market funds, securities lending cash collateral portfolios and short-term investment funds.

The Company offers general account and separate account annuity products, generally in connection with the termination of defined benefit pension plans, both in the United States and the United Kingdom. It also offers partial risk transfer solutions that allow for partial transfers of pension liabilities and annuity products that include single premium buyouts. It offers strategies for complex litigation settlements, primarily structured settlement annuities. Under the Capital Markets Investment Products, the products offered include funding agreements, Federal Home Loan Bank advances and funding agreement-backed commercial paper. Under the Other Corporate Benefit Funding Products and Services, it offers specialized insurance products designed specifically to provide solutions for non-qualified benefit and retiree benefit funding purposes.

Auto & Home

The Auto & Home segment includes personal lines property and casualty insurance offered directly to employees at their employer worksite, as well as to individuals through a variety of retail distribution channels, including independent agents, property and casu! alty spec! ialists, direct response marketing and the individual distribution sales group. Auto & Home primarily sells auto insurance, which represented 67% of Auto & Home total net earned premiums in 2011. Homeowners and other insurance represented 33% of Auto & Home total net earned premiums in 2011. The products in this area are Auto Coverages and Homeowners and Other Coverages. Auto insurance policies provide coverage for private passenger automobiles, utility automobiles and vans, motorcycles, motor homes, antique or classic automobiles and trailers. Auto & Home offers traditional coverage, such as liability, uninsured motorist, no fault or personal injury protection, as well as collision and comprehensive. Homeownersinsurance policies provide protection for homeowners, renters, condominium owners and residential landlords against losses arising out of damage to dwellings and contents from a variety of perils, as well as coverage for liability arising from ownership or occupancy. Other insurance includes personal excess liability (protection against losses in excess of amounts covered by other liability insurance policies), and coverage for recreational vehicles and boat owners. Most of Auto & Home homeownerspolicies are traditional insurance policies for dwellings, providing protection for loss on a replacement cost basis. These policies also provide additional coverage for reasonable, normal living expenses incurred by policyholders that have been displaced from their homes.

International

International provides life insurance, accident and health insurance, credit insurance, annuities, endowment and retirement & savings products to both individuals and groups. The Company focuses on markets primarily within Japan, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Europe and the Middle East. It operates in international markets through subsidiaries and affiliates. It operates in 35 countries in Europe and the Middle East with operations in Poland, the United Kingdom, France, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as through a consolidated joint venture in India.

Corporate & Other

Corporate & Other contains the excess capital not allocated to the segments, which is invested to optimize investment spread and to fund company initiatives and various start-up and run-off entities. Mortgage products offered by MetLife Bank include forward and reverse residential mortgage loans. Residential mortgage loans are originated through MetLife Bank national sales force, mortgage brokers and mortgage correspondents. The residential mortgage banking activities include the origination and servicing of mortgage loans. Mortgage loans are held-for-investment or sold primarily into Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA), Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (FHLMC) or Government National Mortgage Association (GNMA) securities. Deposit products include traditional savings accounts, money market savings accounts, certificates of deposit (CDs) and individual retirement accounts.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Amanda Alix]

Pity poor MetLife (NYSE: MET  ) . Never has a life insurer shed more in an attempt to wind up with less. In MetLife's case, its sale of its retail banking unit to GE Capital (NYSE: GE  ) was an exercise in frustration, as one regulatory hurdle rose up to replace those already vanquished. At the end of last year, the sale was finally given the green light, effectively pulling MetLife out from under the banking regulators' scrutiny.

IAMGOLD (IAG) is one of my favorite gold stocks principally because it is a relatively high cost producer with long lived mines. That paradox arises since high cost producers have the most volatility when gold prices change. If they are operating close to break even, a relatively small rise in gold prices makes them quite profitable. Conversely, when prices fall they bleed all over the floor.

The second factor working in gold stocksfavor is that analysts are growing optimistic again. Yesterday, HSBC put out a bullish note on gold and upgraded Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM), Yamana Gold (AUY), Barrick Gold, Iamgold (IAG), and Goldcorp. Most gold stocks are ranked oldor uy(as opposed to trong Buy by the majority of analysts, meaning that there plenty of room for continued positive news flow on this front.

As a result, Chidley and team upgraded Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) andYamana Gold (AUY) to Neutral from Underweight, and raised Barrick Gold (ABX), Goldcorp (GG) and Iamgold (IAG) to Overweight from Neutral.Gold Fields (GFI) was downgraded “due to increased risk and also reduced expectations for the South Deep operation,” Chidley says.

It's hard to outdo nearly 20% losses, but Aflac's (NYSE: AFL  ) 3.9% slide today was nothing to scoff at, either. Shares of the insurer slumped as bond yields declined further; investment capital flocked from equities to lower-risk bonds, driving 10-year Treasuries to a mere 1.7% rate. Low rates are especially harmful to insurance giants like Aflac, which can hold billions of dollars in low-risk securities as collateral for potential policy payouts.

Aflac Incorporated (AFL), through its subsidiary, American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus, provides supplemental health and life insurance products. Aflac has managed to boost dividends for 30 years in a row, and has a ten year dividend growth rate of 19.30%/annum. The company is really cheap at 9.70 times earnings, but has the capacity to grow profits in the foreseeable future through strategic partnerships in Japan and US markets and increasing number of sales associates. One of the opportunities for growth could be US, which accounts for roughly only a quarter of revenues. It is amazing that a company deriving 70-75% of revenues from Japan could achieve such astounding growth over the past 30 years. Currently, the stock trades at 9.70 times earnings and yields 2.30%. Check my analysis of Aflac.

  • [By Russ Krull]

Aflac (NYSE: AFL  ) sold $700 million in 10-year notes. The money will go toward redeeming two yen-denominated notes with a principal value of about $340 million due in 2014 and $300 million in U.S. dollar-denominated notes due in 2015. Any money left over goes toward "general corporate purposes," including capital contributions to subsidiaries, if needed. With Japan's Central Bank aggressively easing, it's curious that Aflac chose to borrow dollars to pay back yen-denominated notes.
